See you next year!!

Tonight is the last night for Smarty to be with our family.  A new year brings new hopes and dreams and many new journeys.   May the spirit of the holiday season fill your home for the year to come.
love, Smarty

Girlfriend, you've done enough........

It's snowing here today and really feels like Christmas.  There's so much anticipation of the day.  The kids are bouncing off the walls......already planning what time they'll wake up tomorrow.  Once it gets down to the final day before the holiday I often find myself wondering if I have done enough.  I mean, the presents are wrapped, the food is made, the laundry.....well, the laundry is never done.  What I wonder is if I have gone a whole entire day without nagging the kids about doing their reading or getting homework done or dammit can you please stop fighting for one minute with your brother/sister?  Have I grumbled at my husband too much because I have a thousand and one things going through my head and I can't possibly find the one pair of pants he needs this very minute?  Have I made enough Christmas memories with my kids?

This is the time of year when I feel overwhelmed as a mom, a wife, an employee, a volunteer.  I am always wondering if I have done enough.  Then this morning I was looking back through my photo stream I saw these silly happy faces and realized that I may not have done everything I wanted, but I have done enough and girlfriend, you have too.

Enjoy your holiday.  Make memories.  Keep smiling.

Wrap it up!!!

Smarty made it on down to Wrappinville to get some last minute gifts wrapped.
He is a HUGE fan of Saturday Night Live, and loved the skits this past weekend.

There's no place like home for the holidays......

We've been away at grandma's house for the last couple of days and boy is it good to be home.   I get used to our routine here, and anything that diverts from it makes me a bit crazy.   I am so glad that we made it home tonight!

Creepers and pigs and cows......oh my!!!

I don't quite get the whole Minecraft game, but my kids play it ALL the time.  Even Smarty has gotten into the Minecraft spirit!  Silly Smarty, don't you know that it's almost Christmas, not Halloween!

What a girl wants...

Wonder Woman would like a lot of things for Christmas, but mostly some new boots!

You're gonna hear Smarty ROAR......

My little girl is a HUGE Katy Perry fan, she knows all the words to every song.  She watches the videos and the making of the videos and we have watched the Katy Perry documentary at least a hundred times.  Apparently Smarty is a Katy Perry fan too......sing it Smarty!!

Scaling the cupboards......

Smarty must have noticed that there is a bowl of leftover Halloween candy
on top of the kitchen cupboards......

Nobody wants a Smarty in the box.....

When you get right down to it, we are all just a bunch of misfits.  All of us have our little quirks, things that make us a wee bit strange to others.  But there is someone out there for everyone, so go out there and find someone who appreciates your quirks, who loves you for who you are.

More fun than.........

My kids would NOT go to bed tonight........
"It's not a school night mom," they pleaded.
"Just one more show....please?"
So at midnight, Smarty had to think fast.
What kind of fun could he have that wouldn't take a lot of time?
So he called in his friend the monkeys....a whole barrel of them.
And, really, what could be more fun than a barrel full of monkeys?????

Where Angels Play.....

The shooting of 26 innocent people at Sandy Hook Elementary last year was one of the most horrific things that has happened in my lifetime.  Smarty has a very special ornament to hang on his very own elf tree today.  It is a special bell ornament that was purchased from The Sandy Ground.  It is a truly inspirational project started by a NJ firefighter after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in the East Coast.  He thought that by building 26 playgrounds, one for each of the Sandy Hook victims, in areas that were demolished by Hurricane Sandy that he could provide children with special places to play.  He calls the project The Sandy Ground - Where Angels Play.  The playgrounds each have a touch of the child and are brilliantly colored and decorated.  I sat here a few nights ago and read each story, looked at each playground and shed some tears.  I can't imagine a better way to celebrate these kids and teachers.  You can purchase an ornament at for just $5.00 and all of the proceeds go to the project.  I am in no way affiliated with this group and have not participated in any builds but I am inspired by William Lavin and his team of Angels here on Earth.

One ring to rule them all.......

I love that Smarty is pretty geeky.  He loves all of the great geeky things that I do!  I still remember sitting in the front row at the movie theater for the opening of Return of the Jedi.  All of the spaceships looked like they were flying right into us.  I am really looking forward to seeing the second Hobbit movie this weekend.  My six year old is just as obsessed and I love that about him.  He already understands the newer Star Wars movies and knows each and every character in the Marvel comics series.  It is definitely fun to re-live some of my childhood favorites through the kids eyes.
Have a great weekend!

Winter Wonderland

One of the best things about Christmas is that I get to pull out my Christmas houses and set them up.  We have a ledge over our front door that is the perfect size for setting up all of the houses.  I love when the windows of tiny twinkling village light up the entire foyer.  Each year or two we buy another to add to our collection.  This year we visited the house that they used to film A Christmas Story and purchased the old Higbee building and the shed from Ralphie's house.

Son of a Nutcracker!!!!!

I have to admit, the first time I watched the movie, "Elf" I was not a fan.  But then I had kids and the movie made total sense.  Seeing Christmas through the eyes of a man-elf was like seeing Christmas through the eyes of my children.  Each time I watch the movie I see something else that makes me smile.  Thank you Will Ferrell for dressing in that ridiculous costume and making me laugh!

Will there be a white Christmas???

Smarty and his friends can't trust the weather channel's predictions any longer so they have resorted to the Ouija board to determine whether or not there will be a white Christmas........

Come and play......

This is my old Sesame Street house from when I was a kid.  Still in great shape and still fun to play.  The best part?  My kids love it too.  Now come and play, won't you?

Thank you for your service!

On this anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Smarty salutes the men and women of our armed forces who fight tirelessly every single day to keep us safe and sound.  God Bless every single one of our troops, especially those that are serving overseas and are away from their families this holiday season.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

I love the scene in Bridget Jone's Diary where they attend the Ugly Sweater party.  Looks like Smarty is attending a party of his own tonight.  I think that he is having a white elephant exchange with all of those gifts.  I hope you have a great Holiday weekend filled with many parties!

"Elf Gothic" now on loan at the Smarty Institute of Art!

I try to be a cool mom.  I take my kids to Natural History Museum and the Botanical Gardens and the Zoo and the Art Museum.  They loathe the Art Museum, "it's boring" "there's nothing to do there but look at paintings" "can we go now?"

But every once in a while they will ask a question about art or painting or photography and our conversation always goes back to the things we see at the museum.

See, this is how your mom gets in your brain and stays there for your whole life.......

Oh no! Not THAT lollipop hammer!

Like most of you, my phone is with me at all times.  It serves as a calculator, flashlight, alarm clock and even a compass.  It even has a time warp app, better known as CANDY CRUSH.  I thought that only my kids could get addicted to video games, but it turns out adults can fall prey too.  The sound of those candies dropping creates a wonderful escape from the pressures of the day.  Send a life, get me to the next episode, get extra moves....this is how we should operate in real life.  Helping all of our Facebook friends to make it to the next day.

What a great life lessons you have given us, candy crush.
1. be giving, good things will come your way
2. share with others, help them to unlock the pleasures you have already received
3. you failed?  it's okay, press on
4. never, ever, ever quit....there is always another episode

The Smarty-est meal of the day!

It's only Monday and I'm already tired.  The long holiday weekend has just about sent me to the nuthouse......luckily the kids head back to school tomorrow so I'll have a little break.  After a long day at work I am not feeling very festive tonight so, I admit it, I totally stole this idea from someone on Pinterest.   Thank you mystery Pinterest person for making my life a little easier tonight!

Smarty makes a DIY Snowglobe! #Pinterest #Fail

Smarty spent most of the evening looking on Pinterest for fun Holiday crafts to make for his family.  There were so many wonderful ideas to choose from.  He gathered up his supplies, and got ready to make this awesome snow globe!

But Smarty doesn't understand that real life is not like Pinterest.  Pretty things are expensive.  Kitchens are not always clean.  Shoes are not so organized.  Cookies are hardly ever decorated so meticulously.  And snow globes are not so easy to make........

He was moving around some snow when he accidentally tipped the vase and got stuck inside.  POOR SMARTY!!!  #Pinterest #Fail

It's beginning to look a lot like......ME!!!!

I've been missing all of my friends at the North Pole tonight so I took this selfie and posted it on Elfagram.  I think it turned out great!

I knew that my family probably does not have very many photos of me.  I don't see any of my school pictures hanging up in their house and there are certainly not any framed photos of me in the entire house.

SOOOOO this morning when everyone wakes up they will get a big surprise!  I changed everyone's home screen photo to look like this......I'm sure they will love it!!
